Learning Methodologies

The following learning methodologies are often included in Smith high-potential development programs:

Experiential Learning: People learn best by doing; therefore, we use hands-on applications of the concepts, exercises and case discussions. Experiential learning is emphasized in the areas of leadership, systems understanding and team building.

Lectures: Input on current theories and concepts, in addition to case discussion and work, provide a factual as well as practical foundation.

Group Interaction: In all of our customized programs, our goal is to increase knowledge across various parts of the company's businesses, to break down barriers among businesses and to increase networking and collaboration. To this end, group interaction supports learning among participants, builds relationships across businesses and develops future networking relationships. In addition, effective team functioning is an important skill for leaders. Group work provides opportunities for participants to develop team skills.

Action Learning Projects: Projects focused on real-time issues are an essential ingredient in any customized program. These help participants develop and implement some of the analytic, diagnostic and practical skills they are learning in the program. They help further develop the bonds and relationships among participants in the program. Projects also give participants an opportunity for reflection and shared follow-up, which provides the best vehicle for assimilating and internalizing many learning objectives.

Instrumentation: Use of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), an appropriate learning-styles inventory, and perhaps a 360-degree coaching instrument help to increase self-awareness, as well as facilitate learning about one's own leadership strengths. Even more crucial, the MBTI instrument helps participants understand more about interpersonal relationships, team development and collaboration.

Simulations: We regularly incorporate the use of computer as well as paper-based simulations into our programs to enhance the intensity of the learning experience.
