Dr. C.D. Mote, Jr. was named president of the University of Maryland in fall 1998. Mote comes from a successful career as a research engineer and top administrator at the University of California, Berkeley. The university generates $5.93 of economic activity for every dollar appropriated by the General Assembly, providing a statewide impact of nearly $1.8 billion annually. Sponsored research and outreach soured to a record $352 million in FY02. Faculty stars include 31 National Academy members, six Pulitzer Prize Winners, one Nobel Laureate, and scores of Fulbright Scholars.
